Villy Lopman speaks on the Äripäev radio show “The Politician’s Desk”

On 24 May at 11am, RASK attorney and tax expert Villy Lopman discussed the high interest rate on taxes and the constitutionality of the Estonian interest rate on late payments on the radio show “The Politician’s Desk”.

Last week, after a lengthy litigation process, Germany decided that the 6% interest rate for late taxes was disproportionately high and unconstitutional. By contract, interest in Estonia is 21.9%, which questioned by the Supreme Court of Estonia just last year with the help of RASK Attorneys-at-Law, but despite its level, was assessed to be constitutional.

Is it worthwhile to compare the Estonian tax system to other countries, such as Germany? Why is the difference in interest rates that huge and what causes it? What effect does it have on the Estonian business environment and is there any hope that the law might change?

Villy Lopman discussed these and many other important issues on Äripäev radio on 24 May, along with Taavi Juul, tax policy specialist at the Ministry of Finance and radio presenter Liina Laks.
